A Long Long Time Ago

And then I thought it was impossible to have a good time with the Youth Group. I assumed things would always end in tragic despair with those people. Generally speaking, every night out with them is some different kind of drama. In fact, there haven't been nights out with them for a long time because they haven't let us be teenagers and young adults. There's always some bogus opposition to letting up be normal individuals and spend time with each other outside of church service and Saturday Night Torture Chamber which we used to call "youth night". I know Baptist churches have problems allowing their members to express any feelings apart from boredom and stoicism, but I think we should be given a break. It's not every day that you see kids as well behaved as us.

Okay, that's a lie. We're not that well behaved, but we're decent! We are like any other teenagers and young adults out there. Suse, we have to conduct ourselves a little differently, but these days no one pays attention to us anyway. There's so many things that are considered acceptable, that I could show up to your church with a neon green mohawk and sit down in the first row without  another glance from the preacher.

But that's in your church, not in mine.

No, not in mine. In mine, if your skirt is a little bit over the ankle, the devil is already using you to tempt the others into sin. If your neck is in plain view, it might be just a liiiiiittle inappropriate for you to wear that out in public.

Well, not really, but you get the picture.

Our hands are tied, but that's okay, because it's not like we listen or anything. We do as we are told, but we don't take it to the extreme. We may fail sometimes, but we're only human, young, and stupid. What more can you ask of us?

We may not be the exemplary bench warmers, but we're quiet when we need to be, and we nod and smile when we have to. We don't discriminate, either. We're rude to everyone alike. We're careless and we don't really think about the things we do before we start to make fools out of ourselves. We talk before we think and laugh before we understand the joke. We judge before we get to know, we point fingers that should be directed in the opposite direction, we cry before we find the solutions to our problems. We are senseless, naive, and best of all, we have no idea what we're doing.
